John is right, we have to be more civilized on the net, sabotaging
somebodies' job is a bad thing to do. Something I would only reserve
for my worst enemies, not just somebody I would debate with on the
net, no matter how much of a jerk they are.

I'm hoping you could help me out with the term for cell-phone. My
girlfriend is a native Hungarian who wants to be able to write home about
her job selling phones... however, she never learned the term. I wouldn't
be surprised if it is simply a corrupted form of the english word like
many of the adopted foreign terms.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

First, a word about the newsgroup list, and crossposting in general.
I have posted twice on this thread, and both times received miscellaneous
email requests to keep this out of one particular newsgroup or another.
While I do sympathize with the sentiment behind the email, I think these
requests are misguided and, under the circumstances, offensive.
First, in a practical sense, there is no reasonable way to prune the
newsgroup list once the thread has started. After the original
poster created such a large list, people responded from many
different groups. I have no way of knowing where a post came
from, who is interested and who is not. An email message or
a post asking me to stay away only represents the view of a single
person, and I cannot tell if it is the wish of the newsgroup as
a whole -- not to mention that I do not necessarily have to respect
the will of the newsgroup. I post where I want, not where people
like what I have to say. As an excample, this thread contains
some posts on anti-semitism in Poland, as well as a request or
two to keep Jewish vs. anti-semite material out of
soc.cultural.polish!
Second, and more importantly, we are talking about an incident
of anti-semitism so outlandish and vile (complete with Nazi
rhetoric about a "Jewish problem") that it arguably constitutes
hate speech. The outrage has occurred in your newsgroup, whether
you asked for it or not, and is therefore your concern. It is also
the concern of Jews and of concerned individuals everywhere. How
dare you tell me to shut up and keep quiet about an anti-Jewish
incident that occurred in your back yard. To me, hearing a
soc.cultural.polish reader tell me to stay out of his newsgroup
with my complaints of anti-semitism is not much different than
hearing a Polish citizen complain that Jews in America should
mind their own business and leave Poland alone regarding
incidents of anti-semitism there. Sorry, but I will not be
silent.

You are incorrect on both points. A person commits a
crime when he acts (or fails to act) in a way that is
forbidden by criminal laws. He is only *convicted*
of a crime, and criminal penalties are imposed, after
his crime is found by a court of law. A person's
speculation that certain acts of yours (when the
acts themselves are not in question) constitute a
crime is clearly a judgment regarding the countours of
the criminal law, and not your behavior -- and as
such is not grounds for libel. Even where the acts
themselves are disputed, the standards for determining
libel are much different (and much less forgiving of
the wrongdoer) than those of the criminal law.
>Note, I am not saying that you cannot make your accusations;
>merely that you are obligated in the name of clarity to be specific.
Sure -- you are obligated, as a thinking and a considerate
person, to back up what you say.
>In another also, I think it is wrong
>to go after someones livelyhood just because they
>express ideas which you don't agree with.
Were we reasonably debating ideas, you would have an arguable
point -- arguable and not self-evident, because it is perfectly
reasonable in academia to advocate for hiring and firing people
based on which ideological camp they sit in within their field.
But Karl's posts are really not ideas, they are hate speech.
Their purpose is not to educate, to state a position, to invite
dialogue (his protests to the contrary notwithstanding). Rather,
he is stirring trouble. The ideas themselves are offensive and
useless; no reasonable debate can occur on whether there is a
"Jewish problem" in the world. As such, it is not that I
happen to disagree, but that the ideas are "wrong" in a deeper
sense. It is like uttering the word "nigger" or divulging
national secrets or committing libel or treason -- words that
fall so far outside the norms of a civilized society become
behavior, not speech.
Not only is this man's behavior totally inappropriate for
one in an academic position, but it is certainly the perogative
of the school to dismiss someone for publicly advocating
racist positions that bring shame and disrepute on the school.
Karl can say whatever he wants, but that does not mean that
the University of Texas must hire him and support him in his
attempts to spread racist hate. As an academic, they have
hired him to create a body of thoughtful, reasonable
research. He has failed them by instead creating a trail of
bitterness, accusations, and anger. The university ought to
know what kind of garbage they are subsidizing on their
payroll and from their computer accounts, so they can make
their own decision on whether or not to keep him in his
position.
>In order to preserve
>the spirit of freedom and open inquiry we are obligated,
>in a free but adversarial society, to allow for differences
>of opinion regardless of how radical they may appear to our

You have the first half of it down. But freedom of speech
has never, and can never be absolute. Any serious scholar
of the constitution can tell you this. It has never been
the position of the Supreme Court, the founding fathers,
or the legal/political philosophers that all utterances must
be tolerated. Rather, freedom of speech implies a necessary
creation of boundaries -- norms by which the participants
in the great dialogue of ideas agree to live by. When
freedom of speech degenerates into mere shouting, provocations,
lies, threats, plots, then it is meaningless.
This only seems like a paradox until you spend some time
trying to understand it.

Mr. Silberman,
I am posting from soc.culture.russian. I saw the original post. It was one
of three or four posts from the same author deliberately designed to
create controversy and widely crossposted for that reason. I responded to
one of those posts by asking the author to get himself acquainted with
some real Jewish people so he could find out they are no better and no
worse than anyone else. Other people responded differently. Now you come
along and say everyone has a right to post everywhere they want, and no
one has a right to complain. I disagree.
The soc.culture.* groups are _not_ for discussing anti-semitism. They are
for discussing CULTURE. Each of these groups has a charter, and the
charter tells what is on-topic and what is off-topic for each of these
groups. Posters are expected to pay some respect to the charter. Those
who don't may expect to hear from regulars in a newsgroup who don't want
to see all this off-charter stuff in their newsgroup. I support that
general proposition. I have received notes and sent notes myself about
inappropriate crossposting.
You do raise an issue, however, when you say you don't know where the
posts originated from. I have a suggested solution, which I plan to follow
from now on. Every time I crosspost (which is rare) or respond to a
crossposted article, I will sign off as "Posting from ______________", and
insert the name of the group from which I am posting. Then, if someone
wants to object, they know exactly where to write.
Sincerely,
Henrietta Thomas
Posting from soc.culture.russian
P.S. I did not trim newsgroups because I want everyone to see this. My
apologies in advance to anyone who is offended.

Check it out Brigitta. KoVACUOUS has no ability for original metaphor nor
simile nor of original wit. I liked your chicken neck image. (If only he
took that prophylactic off his frontal lobe, he could be a human.) He is
incapable even of wordplay. Probably too much selfplay. He is unable to
rise above the bland and banal. Regrettably, it's likely that he'll never
be surprised.

I'm quite sure that Joe thinks about it. Why wouldn't he? That is not the
point. I have no doubt that he regards them as women, that is to say, the
whole package, the unique personality that animates the body, his
engagement with that unique personality as well as the body. Let's put it
in this old metaphor: Joe regards women as a unique, rare and fine wine,
something to savour, to honour and celebrate, something to behold,
something to surrender to, something that realy does get better as it
ages, and not as you regard it -- a glass of grape juice to be guzzled
down. Joe regards women as women, whereas, you regard women as a life-
support system for a cunt. An inflatable pneumatic doll would be
sufficient for you and it would match your personality -- thin-skinned and
insubstantial. And for what I know of Joe, he is WELL HUNGary.

Just for the record:
Last year, when Gabor presented his usual springtime question about chicks in
the newsgroup, I reminded him first that it's more respectful to call them
ladies, or women. So much about being a misogynist.
Wally Keeler accuses me with not living up to my promise of stepping out from a
thread. False of course, I never posted anything further in the "Gay Life in
Budapest" thread. ( You lied Wally)
| wondered what would be the evidence of me being
- self centered
- autoerotic
- homophobic
- misogynist (whatever the heck that means)
- whining hypocrite
The best he could come up with was: "The evidence is your posts." He keeps it
secret even from himself which parts he is referring to, just like Dima did not
too long ago.
Than he acts surprised: "Misogynist? You don't know what that means and you're
going to University?" I wonder which major requires the knowledge of the term
for hating women.
He considers name calling that I regard to his trash as unimportant (nothing),
so I am not really surprised by his latest stunt.
Without base ha claims that
<Quote
(Gyorgy Kovacs) asks:
|- "woman-hater" (what the heck is a woman?)
Your mother, dipstick.
<Unquote
If you followed my posts (I hope you did not get too bored) you see that I
never asked a dumb question like that. Well that's a real unmodified Dimaist
method from Wally, and of course just an other lie.
And for the finish: I guess I just figured out why Wally jumped on me for
refusing to consider Budapest as a Gay Resort (which it isn't):

Wally's Poems and Brigitta's Novels.
